WHY I am Writing a Fraserview-Sermon Blog

I am one of those who can’t sit still in the pew.  In fact, I have sometimes envied those who nod off, text during, tune out, count down, and gawk around while the 20-odd minute sermon rolls on.  Not that I notice all that stuff when I should be listening to said sermon…

Nonetheless, whether it’s the large coffee or a need to connect and make conversation, I wriggle about, yah-but, and mull over whatever is said. I've been going to church since I was five, and honestly I've pretty much heard it all and am quite eager to be surprised and stirred up.

Most times I agree with what’s said from the pulpit; at times, though, I question, distrust, and even dispute.  But every single time, I desperately desire to connect with others to discuss, stretch, inform, and learn from conversations inspired by the sermon.

But ours seems to be shy times. Or polite times. Or trite and "lite" times. Post Sunday-sermon chitchat, in my experience, tends to be more about how full the restaurant parking lot will be or how those Lions (or Flames or Knicks) are doing, or how badly the week before unfolded. I just can't find more than a handful of souls with whom I am free to have a conversation that matters - to unravel, thrash out, or size up the sermon without censure or even more sermonizing.

NOW, DON'T GET ME WRONG!  This isn't about bashing the preacher!  Try it and you'll get bounced!  But it IS about looking at practices and concepts differently from the cliche, from the "way it's always been around here," or from "how I learned it in Sunday school."

So here’s my invitation to those who listen to sermons and can't sit still through a one of them, to those who need digital pew-mates, to those who want to constructively think and conciously apply...

... to those who want to have a conversation that matters....
